Hello Autumn! Let’s Talk Ticks
Autumn officially starts next week here in Brisbane, and we are so ready for those cooler mornings, golden afternoons and extra-long dog walks. It’s one of the best times of year to be out and about with your pup!
But as the seasons change, it’s also a good little reminder that ticks are still around. So here is our blog Hello Autumn! Let’s Talk Ticks to guide you.
When are ticks most active?
In Brisbane, ticks (especially paralysis ticks) are most active during:
Spring
Summer
And early Autumn
They love warm, humid weather and hang out in long grass, bushland, leaf litter and even our backyards. So if your dog enjoys a good sniffari, they could be at risk during these months.
How grooming helps
Regular grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog looking fabulous (although we do love that part)
Keeping coats neat and brushed makes it much easier to spot ticks early. During your dog’s groom, we’re hands-on the whole time, which means we can sometimes pick up things you might not notice at home.
It’s not a replacement for prevention, but it’s definitely a helpful extra layer of care.
What you can do at home
A few simple habits go a long way:
Use a vet-recommended tick preventative
Check your dog after bush walks
Feel around the ears, under the collar, between the toes and under the tail
Keep your yard tidy and grass trimmed
It only takes a minute, and it can make a big difference.
If you find a tick…
Try not to panic. Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick remover, grip close to the skin and pull straight up. Then keep an eye on your dog over the next day or two.
If you notice wobbliness, weakness, vomiting, a change in bark or breathing issues head straight to your vet.
Autumn is such a beautiful time of year and we want all our Doggy Day Spa & Doggy Store Australia pups enjoying it safely. If your dog is due for a groom, we’d love to see you in salon soon for a seasonal freshen-up.
Here’s to cozy mornings, crunchy leaves and happy, healthy tails. 🐶🍁
