Winter Grooming for Queensland Dogs – Keeping Your Pup Fresh, Fluffy & Fabulous All Season

When you think “winter,” you might imagine snow, frost, and puffy jackets. But here in Queensland? Winter is more of a light cardigan situation. Our days are still mild, the sunshine still pops in, and the only ice we see is in our iced coffee. But don’t let the gentle weather fool you — your dog’s grooming needs still change in the cooler months, and it’s important to adapt your routine.
At Doggy Dayspa, we know that winter is the perfect time to keep your furry friend clean, comfortable, and looking adorable (bonus: winter fluff + a good groom = maximum cuddle factor). So here’s our guide to keeping your pup in tip-top shape this season.
1. Don’t Skip the Groom Just Because It’s Cooler
It’s tempting to let your dog’s coat grow longer in winter, thinking it’ll keep them warmer. But a messy, overgrown coat can actually trap moisture, dirt, and even parasites. A long coat that’s not regularly brushed and maintained can become matted, which doesn’t insulate — it just causes discomfort and skin problems.
A regular groom will:
Keep their coat healthy and free of knots.
Help natural oils distribute evenly for a shiny, protective layer.
Allow us to check for any skin changes or lumps under the fur.
Think of it like your hair — just because it’s cooler doesn’t mean you skip washing and brushing for three months (your friends would notice).
2. Warm Baths Without the Chill Factor
Winter baths in QLD are still comfy if done right. At Doggy Dayspa, we always use warm water and make sure your pup is dried completely before heading home. Leaving a dog damp in cooler weather can make them uncomfortable and more susceptible to chills, especially smaller or short-haired breeds.
At home, if you’re washing your dog:
Use lukewarm water, not hot (dogs overheat faster than we do).
Dry thoroughly with a towel, followed by a gentle blow dry on low heat.
Avoid leaving them outside immediately after a bath — give them a cosy indoor spot to warm up.
3. Paw & Skin TLC
Winter air can be drier than in summer, which means your dog’s skin and paw pads might need extra care. If you notice flakiness, itching, or cracks in the pads, it’s a sign they need some TLC.
Pro tips:
Use a paw balm to keep pads soft and healthy.
Stick to gentle, moisturising shampoos.
Brush regularly to stimulate natural oil production.
4. Coat Styles for Winter Comfort
You don’t have to shave your dog short in winter — but you do need to keep them tidy. We often recommend a “winter trim” for many breeds: slightly longer than summer styles, but still neat enough to avoid knots and dirt build-up.
For double-coated breeds (like Border Collies, Huskies, and Golden Retrievers), de-shedding is a must. It removes the dead undercoat, preventing tangles and allowing their natural insulation to work properly.
5. Keep an Eye on Activity Levels
Cooler mornings sometimes mean fewer walks, but dogs still need exercise for both mental and physical health. A clean, well-groomed coat is more comfortable during playtime — no clumps of mud between the toes, no grass seeds stuck in fur, and less chance of tangles from that enthusiastic roll in the park.
